where the light is… July 4, 2008

even though they’re songs i’ve already heard a million times over, john mayer’s “new” live album, “where the light is” is by far some of his best work to date. i bought the album less than an hour ago and it’s by far the best live work i’ve ever heard.

gravity is even more heart-wrenching…more haunting…and ballsier than ever before. john’s virtuosity with this track has certainly come a long way since the debut of JM3 live at house of blues here in chicago a few years back. whipping out the old ray charles classic, “i don’t need no doctor” is even better than when john did it with scofield not so long ago…it’s as raw as ray could ever make it himself. a great infusion of blues, funk, and jazz combined in a wonderful blend that is characteristic to JM3 alone.

the biggest treat for me is on disc one…from a song that every [guitar-slinging] john mayer fan hates…”daughters” shines through as one of the tasty little surprises you’ll find. opening with rural blues-style slide work, it’s the same classic track with a deeper meaning provided by a new layer of subtle and tasteful slide fills throughout.

in essence, i thought it was impossible for mayer to make these songs anymore ingenious than they already were…i was wrong.

now if you’ll excuse me…i’ve got to sink my chops into this one on my strat for myself. it’s too brilliant to let the moment pass.

movies i’m just GIDDY about this summer… June 30, 2008

i normally don’t post movie reviews or openly express what movies i want to see, but this summer’s a definite exception:

oh…oh, i so do [believe in harvey dent]. truthfully, aaron eckhart and the chicago skyline are the only reasons i’m going to see the dark knight. granted, batman is my favorite superhero of all-time, but christian bale is – in my opinion – the worst batman. they would’ve been better off casting aaron eckhart as batman in the first place. he’s got the charm and he’s just so…yum. oh well, harvey dent/two-face will have to do i suppose.

another film coming out – this week no less – is hancock. much like the dark knight, the only two reasons i’m going to see it are because of jason bateman…and the simple fact that he plays a PR consultant. sorry will, as much as i like you, you’re not my main attraction this time around. this children, is quite possibly my nerdiest motivation to go spend $10 on a movie. as a matter of fact, i remember when it cost less than $5 to see a damn movie in the theatre…ick. so while everyone else goes to see will smith hurl a whale back into the sea, i’ll be laughing my ass off at bateman’s one-liners the likes of “everybody remembers walter the grey whale…(to which smith replies ‘i don’t even remember that’; bateman replies) …greenpeace does“. stuff like that that no one else will get for the sake of context are what i’m excited about. i know…i’m lame. either way, i fully intend on seeing “hancock” after my speech class on wednesday nite.

another movie that i wanted to see – but actually just got back from about a half hour ago – is wall-e. it was cute without being your typical cheesy disney flick. i’m happy to say it was a very thought-provoking film. obviously, most young kids that see it won’t understand the underlying conflict of the film other than the fat, lazy humans rely exclusively on robots and eventually get back to earth and “re-colonize”. given the current state of things, wall-e was dead-on about social issues we – americans especially – face. i refer back to my first post ever on this blog where i stated that i believe consumerism will be the ultimate downfall of society as a whole…this film eerily solidified that claim i made not so long ago. i won’t divulge too much for the sake of spoiling the overall impact and message the film had. i was very impressed with the storyline as it kept my attention on both and intellectual as well as an emotional level. i’ll admit…i wish i had a little wall-e of my own though not under similar circumstances.

ideally, i would write a longer post and perhaps a review of wall-e, but i have to be up at 3am for work…then i have class for the rest of the day until roughly 10pm. so i believe it’s about time to call it a nite. ooh! another thing i’ll potentially post about tomorrow is amos lee’s new album…we shall see what kind of ambition i have tomorrow if all the awkward moments i’m expecting don’t completely deter me from doing so. nevermind that…
