ah yes, so i finally remembered where the library is…give me a break, i haven’t been up here in over a year.

i hate to admit it, but i have little to say other than hello, i am still among the living.  just been getting reacquainted and acclimated to the commuting and walking and sloth elevators etc.  surprisingly, i have little to complain about other than book prices.  i’ve addressed the irony between depaul and COD book prices many times before, but this quarter has been the kicker.  let’s do the math…at depaul, i currently have three classes and a total of ten required texts.  i’m also taking casey’s biz comm class at COD for the requirement and motivation which requires only one book.  since pictures are worth a thousand words, here’s one for you…with all sales taxes included:

now i’m not sure, but i’ve got a feeling e-follett’s got a pretty sweet scam going.  don’t cry for me though…i got my book on amazon courtesy of ecampus for $4.21, ha, suckers!  however, i found out something relatively strange.  depaul’s bookstore is provided through barnes & noble, which is nice; good selection of everything.  i found out though that e-follett is either a subsidiary or an affiliate of barnes & noble…strange bedfellows there.

finally, the only other interesting bit of bait that i have isn’t at all related to me, but to georgia; surprise surprise!  this past week, mikheil saakashvili attended meetings with NATO secretary jaap de hoop schaeffer who consequently condemned russian actions in georgia a month ago.  it’s a step in the right direction, however, georgia isn’t yet being considered for NATO membership for some time.  i think that’s a mistake, but there are obvious diplomatic issues that suggest – to me also, i promise i’m not a complete imbecile – that NATO membership for georgia, as it stands, could potentially create more challenges…say for example, a multi-national war against russia.  stuff like that.  so, i’ll leave you with another ridiculous picture that i took upon myself to edit for the sake of humor and truth and irony in it all…have a great day everyone.

shit…i generally don’t use obscene amounts of profanity here, but we’re ultimately fucked as a nation if this GOP ticket elbows its way to inauguration day. never again do i want to hear a single smear ad about obama’s inexperience from the mccain camp…at least he made it to the senate. and since when is there a wasilla, ak? if you’re not a mainland state representative, i find it hard to believe one could effectively co-govern the entire nation, especially with such limited diplomatic experience beyond county fairs and bake sales. but i digress…

hurricane gustav is on its way, and i’m beginning to wonder if it’s going to be anywhere near as intense as the media is playing it up to be. not to downplay the tragedy of hurricane katrina, but she was a cat. 5; gus was downgraded to cat. 3 today. i’m sure new orleans is still in a fragile state since ‘05, but i have a feeling the hasty, selective evacuations may have been a bit inflated…we’ll see tomorrow. i hope i’m right in my prediction that gus will fizzle more, but that remains to be seen. by no means do i want to see another katrina.

anyone hear from saakashvili and the new accusations by the neo- [karl] marx brothers? alright, so putin isn’t directly mentioned in that article, but it’s become insanely obvious that medvedev is just a puppet with a napoleon complex packing enough room for two. vicious aren’t i? i can’t believe this isn’t a bigger issue in the “news”…i think russia quickly cutting diplomatic ties with the US specifically is a bit troublesome. then again, maybe i’m just paranoid.

and how’s my buddy misha? kind of hard to find out since georgian info is so hard to come by, even in the US. i’m still waiting for the kremlin to try to bring him to brussels and charge him for war crimes…right, that’ll be taken seriously by the international community. then again, with the exceptions of ukraine, germany, and poland, i see little concern for this whole issue. but i’m beating a dead horse…

enough for tonite. we’ll see what happens with gustav after tomorrow. i, unlike the other lucky mofos in the US, have to work at 4am tomorrow…but i’ll finish on a happy note:

real time’s back..!

georgian president, mikheil saakashvili addressing the press, citing russian cease-fire violations (photo: reuters)

strange how one can barely recall what was important in the news less than a week ago before this whole georgian-russian cockfight started. honestly, i can’t remember what the pressing issue was before i saw saakashvili pleading for the US to intervene in the conflict. the only “big” story i can recall was of the rumored edwards affair.

from the research i’ve been able to do on the saakashvili presidency and his relations with putin especially, i’m starting to think this was all a setup. as i stated in my previous post, saakashvili is known for being hotheaded, perhaps even nationalistic; perfect fodder for russian aggressive tactics both diplomatically and militarily. while on my break this morning, i read the new york times as always and saw about three articles on the front page alone dedicated to the conflict in georgia. one of which stated that russia not only wants saakashvili to step down – or be impeached/dismantled/whatever rhetorical terminology one may associate – but russia also wants him to be tried for war crimes in the hague…beg pardon? pot calling the kettle black much?

it’s still too early to tell and i need to do a bit more sleuthing on misha-boy, but i’ve had solid views of the kremlin since i was very young. obviously, all those affected in georgia have my support and i wave a humble georgian flag for the civilians caught in the midst of all the fighting. it’s starting to remind me a bit too much of kosovo all over again. so for now, i’m on misha’s side…however, now’s the time for him to be as balls to the wall as he can possibly be. not reckless nor equally helpless. yes, appeal to the international community, but don’t insult them. he knows damn well why bush has held off involvement, and most of the world probably has the same reservations. if i still believed in god, i’d say a prayer for georgia…i might have to just for the state of things.

georgian president, mikheil saakashvili pushed to the ground by bodyguards as russian planes fly over the city of gori. (photo: new york times)

given that i’m neither georgian nor russian, a scholar of the kremlin or georgian democracy, i can’t accurately weigh in on the conflict that has since calmed down within the past few hours or so. however, given that georgia barely boasts a population of 5 million, whereas russia occupies roughly one quarter of the earth’s land-mass, it’s not too hard to comprehend the mathematical quandaries associated with this particular conflict. it seems neither south ossetia, abkhazia, or georgia are any better off after this entire blunder. true, i’ve heard much of mikheil saakashvili being considered a bit of a rebel, even by georgians. strangely enough, i truly hope he doesn’t give into the kremlin, suggesting he step down as georgia’s president.

equally, i loosely understand the diplomatic response from medvedev and putin, however, not the military force they threw behind it. i’m not one to speak on behalf of georgia or south ossetia/abkhazia, but russia knows it can crush georgia in the blink of an eye. however, this was allegedly a “peace-keeping” mission. there’s nothing peaceful about collateral damage…only the sickening euphemism it stands for. as the daughter and granddaughter of political refugees who escaped the communist regime in 1968, i’m not the biggest fan of russo-european bureaucracy, if you can call it that. situations such as this automatically bring back the whole idea of russia’s the bad guy, and you can’t convince me otherwise. had the defending nation been a bit larger, i could almost understand the amount of force russia used against the georgians…this was unwarranted.  here’s an interview with saakashvili from last year.  you’ll see it vaguely foreshadows a decent amount of bureaucratic conflict we’ve seen in the past week.

today is one of those days that i absolutely hate the media…

i think that russia invading georgia “regarding” south ossetia is a bit more important the national enquirer “journalists” literally stalking john edwards, thusly forcing him to admit his extramarital affair…

i’ll play devil’s advocate for sen. edwards, but i truly don’t give a damn that he cheated on his wife…it’s sad, yes, but not newsworthy.

i’m so disgusted by all this that i’ve literally nothing more to say…makes me sick.
