cp1_0326091013So unless you’re a Chicagoan of Irish heritage or simply a resident of the South Side in the Beverly/Morgan Park area – as well as the other South Side neighborhoods densely populated with the Irish - you may not have heard the news that the South Side Irish Parade, which has been a neighborhood tradition for over 30 years and a Chicago landmark in and of itself since, has been canceled…indefinitely.  Here’s a press release from the South Side Irish Parade Committee dated Mar. 25, 2009:

For Immediate Release 25 Mar 2009

For confirmation contact Mary Beth Sheehan (773-393-8687)

RE: SOUTH SIDE IRISH ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE PLANS FOR 2010

Let this release serve as notice that the South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee is not planning to stage a parade in its present form in March of 2010.

This decision was not arrived at lightly. For 31 years, this parade was a staple of the Beverly/Morgan Park and Mt. Greenwood communities – a celebration of faith, family and heritage that was cherished by thousands. Founded in 1979 by the Hendry and Coakley families, it was intended to instill in this community an appreciation for the Irish heritage that so many of its residents share.

This parade was an eagerly anticipated annual event which celebrated families, many of whom have created decades long traditions that we hope will endure. But what began as a neighborhood parade is now an event of international proportions. More than 300,000 people typically flock to the Beverly area each year, and the sheer volume has become more than the neighborhood can reasonably accommodate. With these numbers comes a collection of issues that strain both the host community and those individuals charged with effectively managing the crowds. Additionally, the amount of resources required to launch the event has become overwhelming to the community.

The Committee would like to thank the tens of thousands of parade faithful who supported this event for more than 30 years. The multigenerational families who turned out along Western Avenue each year, along with the fine organizations featured in the Line of March, were the essence of what made this parade so special. We would also like to thank the Chicago Police Department for the effort they put into managing the ever-growing crowd while working to maintain the dignity of the event.

While we regret the need to alter such a fine tradition, the Committee feels that suspending the South Side Irish Parade in its present form is the just and responsible thing to do. It is our hope, however, that this will not mean an end to the neighborhood’s annual celebration. The Committee will work to create a series of alternate events that will return us to what the parade’s founders had in mind – a neighborhood-friendly celebration of Irish heritage. Please look for news of our plans later this year.

Thank you for your support,

The South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee

Now, I understand full-well that the parade has become a huge party over the years and an international attraction, but when you watch or read the reports about arrests made, it’s generally out-of-towners who are the perpetrators.  When I say “out-of-towners” I don’t mean people from surrounding suburbs, but from places as far as Arkansas as well as other regions in the Midwest.  So that’s how it’s playing out?  The out-of-towners are what’s contributing to the cancellation?  Supplementing reports also suggest that underage drinking at the event is an issue.  Tell me, where isn’t underage drinking an issue?

I do believe that the neighborhood’s integrity should be maintained in the sense of quelling vandalism where it may occur and stepping up police presence, but canceling the event altogether is a mistake.  The event began as a community event, and I have no doubt that it will be put on next year, perhaps illegally.  If it does, I guarantee there will not only be Chicagoans from the South Side, but all over the Chicagoland area to protest the decision.

Considering the volume of public outcry already, I have no doubt the issue

SSIP 25th Anniv. Poster

SSIP 25th Anniv. Poster

will continue a year from now.  It may fade with the onset of summer and the other festivities around the city, but I’m hoping the issue makes a resurgence during the summer Celtic Fest at Grant Park as well as the Irish Fest at Gaelic Park.  There’s already a Facebook group up and running – yes, of which I am a part – protesting and writing to city officials as well as committee heads to bring the parade back to Chicago.

obama as a brand… January 15, 2009

transcendence through...pepsi?

transcendence through...pepsi?

i know i know, i’ve been far too lax in this new year on my posting habits.  i guarantee it’s for no reason other than having an incredibly full schedule.  however, this is truly a rare occasion since my second class was canceled…i’m not thrilled being stuck sitting around for four hours before my third class, but it’s given me some time to reflect on the upcoming inaugural event…that’s right kids, it’s dangerous when i’ve been given the chance to let my mind run wild, and here’s the latest nonsense it’s come up with.

i was bored – as always – in my american foreign policy class this morning and i started to wax a bit about the impending obama administration when it dawned on me…obama is indeed a brand in and of himself.  alright, so maybe the epiphinal moment didn’t occur over the course of an hour and a half, but the idea festered a bit more than usual.

i nerdily watched the frontline special “the persuaders” which casey had shown our PR class last year and started to apply theoretical concepts presented in the special to stuff i’ve noticed fairly recently, obama being one of the outstanding ones.  not to come off as cynical, i’ve noticed a fair trend not only amidst the “general public” (shh! don’t tell my new PR professor i said that, i’m supposed to erase it from my lexicon…), but in the media and corporate sector as well.  interesting that pepsi, not to be lost on pop culture iconography, has slightly altered their logo to nearly identically match that which we saw throughout the entire obama campaign.  now, i know i’m not the first to notice or comment on this, but i’m just now getting around to mentioning it since i first saw it at the clark/lake stop on the brownline during my morning commute.  however, it’s an issue that strikes a relatively high level of importance if not concern that has set the alarms in my brain off periodically.

since getting into the study of image and persuasion myself, i’ve begun to – perhaps naively – notice trends i either ignored, dismissed, or readily accepted myself in the very recent past.  the lines that divided the commercial and political world are so blurred that they may as well not exist at all.  generally speaking, most people would likely assess the new ad campaign by pepsi for what it is: capitalizing on a political phenom turned pop culture icon who happens to be the next president of the united states.

i’m actually far more surprised that pepsi didn’t sue obama’s people for using an altered representation of their original logo, but then again i’m not.  pepsi would never want that PR blood on their hands for putting capital over hope…that’s what it’s all about.  the exploitation of the obama brand that is, in essence, HOPE.  unequivocally brilliant in meaning and acceptable by all who – seemingly – buy into the entire campaign.  to quote kevin roberts, it’s a superbrand in that’s it’s created “loyalty beyond reason”.  ask anyone in chicago why they support obama and you’ll likely get the proxy “native son” rationale, but it runs much deeper than that.

not to diminish obama’s success, i voted for him myself, but remember that as you watch the inauguration on tuesday.  how will this set the tone for the remainder of his term?  will we be thrust into an even greater superbranded society through avenues other than corporate ones?  maybe my thoughts are a bit disconnected, but i believe that we’re in for a shock on this one.  with no corporate social responsibility agreement to uphold the image of the obama brand, are we all going to become more loyal brand desciples or turn against it when a demographic need isn’t immediately met?

to put it simply, is hope enough..?

schultz and his brand… December 10, 2008

maybe it’s the stress finally getting to me, maybe it’s the possible corporate visit tomorrow, or maybe i’m just not as confident as i once was in the company.  i missed it monday night, but i managed to get a hold of the howard schultz interview with katie couric.  ironically, i had a similar reaction to the interview that a tv analyst had as well…why did this interview happen in the first place?  upon watching it myself, i can say it was likely filmed to provide reassurance among shareholders and possibly employees on the store level.  however, far too much jargon regarding brand meaning.  there are things howard presented well, and things that could’ve been toned down.  given my views of corporate governance in accordance with social responsibility, i think he beat the horse a bit too much.  strategically placing a barista in a (red) apron at the door acting as an usher didn’t help the message from being blatantly obvious.

however, kudos for taking on accountability!  howard, you get a gold star on that one.  not necessarily admitting guilt, however, accepting the consequences of previous decisions and where the company will move from here.  nice handling of the dunkin donuts question as well.  i’m still not too optimistic in terms of financial stability of the company and was surprised to hear him say that overall “trust” in the starbucks brand is at 86%…i haven’t seen that in my store at all.  everyday, there’s at least five or so customers – both regulars and new faces – that beg the question, “is this store closing too?  you seem to be doing well, why are other stores closing?” etc…

i’m not entirely sure how i feel about the interview as a whole, aside from i believe it was pitched by starbucks to cbs…not entirely a negative thing, however, i’ve yet to see such high-profile corporate interviews yield any promise in the coming fiscal years.  ironically, what’s meant to reassure generally seems to plant more seeds of doubt.

considering i have a direct stake in this, i’m incredibly concerned…

u2's bono makes a surprise appearance at the starbucks manager's conference in new orleans, la

i’ll say it now, that i’m so willing to be a whore for starbucks so long as bono approves it.  i know contradict myself somewhere therein as a result.  if you haven’t yet noticed because you live under a rock or are simply unfamiliar with product (red), starbucks has teamed up to form yet another co-branded force to be reckoned with.  as in the footsteps of gap, dell, apple, and a few others, starbucks has trademarked three holiday drinks and co-branded to the extreme.  today was “(red) friday” instead of “black friday” to those of you familiar with the idiocy of the american consumer on the day after thanksgiving.  at any rate, i hate admitting that i disagree with naomi klein on this issue of the co-branded world.  yes, capitalism is king, and how much of the $.05 actually goes to the purchasing of pharmaceuticals could indeed be argued vigorously, but given that i’m no investgative reporter, nor working [yet] at starbucks corporate in marketing, i have to take the endeavor at face value.

it’s an absolutely brilliant move; timely and tugging at the heartstrings of the selfish and jaded american consumer, to remember – hopefully – to do at least one good deed this season by buying one of the uber-branded drinks we offer in a partnership with quite possibly the largest charity brand since the red cross.  have i said “brand” enough yet?  i want to get that through to all of you.  this is huge, whether or not you recognize it.  not only huge in the sense of the money and marketing involved, but of the enormously huge corporate responsibility attached to it for both mega-brands.  i’ll not get into the contradictions of that argument, because for once, i’m not being as pessimistic as usual, but i guarantee that post is soon to come.  right now, i’m satisfied chilling and slinging drinks in my trendy (red) apron and giddy that such a hideously contradictory practice is in place for the holidays; i’m hoping for limited ulterior motive.

another thing that has starbucks tugging at my own heartstrings…SOCIAL MEDIA!  yep, it’s official, starbucks has broken the barrier of social networking!  not sure yet how i feel about it, aside from the fact that it needs much, much, MUCH more development, i’m not sure how comfortable i am with customers searching for me via “V2V” as it’s called.  still, i can’t help giving it a chance in hopes of someday being one of the people continually developing it.

my "giving tree" flyer (click to enlarge)

the giving tree (click to enlarge)

finally on my tardy list of holiday newsworthiness – concerning starbucks that is – my store’s “make you mark” teamed up with humanitarian service project.  nice to indirectly help them out through customer charity.  definitely didn’t expect it to be as successful as it’s proved to be so far.  feels good…makes me feel like i’ve got a good handle on cutting my teeth in PR lately.  my next big project – aside from the PRSSA conference in february and the american lung association “climb chicago” – is a local 5k or something of the sort in march.  i’m in no way gloating for once, but i’m proud of myself with the giving tree; i wasn’t optimistic at all and the response has been so positive that i hope i can keep on plugging away for HSP even though i’m not an intern anymore.  so, how busy am i that i still think of writing a stupid story about the past year at starbucks?  given that i’m on break until the new year, i think i’m just going to have to crack and give in to writing again for pleasure rather than obligations.  i’ve been worrying everyone in my complete lack of blogging and inability to concentrate effectively on my writing.  surprisingly, i found i do have a limit for writing, and it hadn’t occurred to me until it was recently pointed out by my best friend.  but i’m back, and i’ll be annoying everyone in the blogosphere even more as the break crawls on and i suffer more cabin fever when the first blizzard hits.  so here i close for the night considering i have to be up again in four hours to open the store.  i leave you with this:

yep!  i got my 15 seconds of social networking fame thanks to rick sanchez’s real-time twitter feeds on cnn newsroom earlier this afternoon.  i was working on my presentation and checking on twitter.  aimlessly multitasking, and submitted an answer, not thinking much of it.  i had the tv on in the background, then i heard “reading your responses on twitter, ‘rudy made a miscalculation…’”.

?!?!?!?!

i turned around and saw my post on the screen!  he read three responses – mine was first after the commercial break – just before closing the show.  i scrambled for my camera, but by the time i’d hit record, his segment was over.  i wanted the verifiable proof that i was indeed, indirectly on cnn.  i’ll just wait until the transcripts are posted on cnn.com and paste them here.

still, very cool occurance for someone studying communications and social networking…i’ll try again for tomorrow after work.

**update, 09-19-08**

(full transcript)

SANCHEZ: All right, thanks a lot, Jacqui. Your comments to us. Here we go. “Rudy made a miscalculation. The RNC itself would be an act of community organization, rallying around its leader.”

“Rudy intended to make those remarks about Obama. The repetition was over the top in his speech.”

“Rudy is a Rove robot. His puppet strings are easily pulled.”

And there we go on and on. “Oh, make no mistake about it, he meant it,” says one of our Twitter commenters as well.

There you go, they continue to come in. We’ll continue to ask and you continue to respond. Thanks so much for being with us. We’ll be looking for you again tonight. Special coverage on some of the political issues and of course the very latest on the polls at 10:00 p.m. Eastern. I’m Rick Sanchez. See you in a bit.

i’ve steadily come to realize that i’m getting more interested and involved in food safety advocacy, among other things.  ever since i saw “super size me”, started drinking odwalla – which utilizes “flash pasteurization” to kill bacterium in their products – and heard about the ethical issues regarding monsanto’s synthetic hormone injection, posilac, i’ve become more concerned from an ethical marketing point of view.

granted, i’m not the healthiest eater, but since i’ve gotten older and attempted to eat less junk, i’ve noticed terrifying trends in the food and drug industry, especially its marketing tactics.  the FDA is the one organization i have the biggest beef with…not to be confused with USDA…i know, terrible attempt at a bad joke.

i’m doing an organizational culture report on odwalla for my first biz comm. presentation, and next is our ethics presentation…that’s where i’m gonna dig in to the FDA irradiating produce a bit more.

i don’t know, just felt like sharing a generally irrelevant thought…time to get back to work.

my mom scared the hell out of me last nite when i got home from class. she asked if i’d seen sarah palin’s speech at the RNC, to which i raised an eyebrow and reminded her that i missed both the cubs game and the RNC due to class. i’ve seen small chunks of the speech and it’s just like the rest of the empty-headed conservative drivel i’ve ever heard…but she scared me.

she’s a democrat turned independent who doesn’t plan – at the moment – on voting in november. however, last nite, i walked in the door and we started the dangerous conversation of politics. she said, verbatim, “you know, after her speech i really like that sarah palin. she seems like the right gal for the job and i agree with her”…

?!?!?!?!?!

there is no possible way this woman is my mother! she can’t be the very same who taught me to be self-reliant, distrust the government in solving social issues, and to always question authority and the motives of others…this very woman got sucked into the fundamentalist rhetoric of the GOP…

at any rate, anyone who reads this blog knows who’s side i’m on, but that’s not the point. the point is, QUESTION EVERYTHING…question your politicians. go ahead and pull a campbell brown, and piss off your [political] interviewee. they serve YOU…therefore, they should have nothing to hide.

but always remember that politicians are working out of self-interest before that of the people…

there’s truly little i can say about this interview, other than now americans get to see the true hypocrisy of bipartisan politics and how neither party is the “better” party.  this evening, larry king was scheduled to interview john mccain during the republican national convention, but the mccain camp has pulled the interview as a result of this interview of mccain spokesman tucker bounds by cnn’s campbell brown.  the contradicitons are just flying in this…it’s a doozy.  i applaud cnn for attempting to – seemingly – get both sides of party politics…

ah, so quite relieved these days.  my aforementioned gripes of intellectual incompetence – how’s that for a paradox for you? – had everything to do with depaul’s school of education giving me the runaround rather than solving a simple problem.  after much cattle-prodding, i’m finally re-enrolled and ready for fall.  because they took forever to get themselves together, i registered for casey’s business comm class at COD as a safety net.  whatever, it’s one nite a week and it’s with him, therefore it’ll be painless and a comfortable environment; i don’t have many of those these days.

my classes aren’t particularly what i had in mind, however, i tried to make them as interesting as possible.  so, i’ll be dividing my time between “philosophy & its issues”, business ethics (philosophical inquiry), and “the qur’an & its interpreters”…and of course intro to business comm.  you can only get so enthused about requirements.  winter quarter’s where the fun’s at.  i’ll officially be out of SOE and into the college of communications.

in dividing my stress-time between school and socio-political conflict, i’ve been opening up to the strangest music.  if you know me already, you’ll know i never listen to the radio save for as an annoyance to wake me up for work at 3am everyday.  lately, i’ve been giving daft punk a try…i blame one of my exes for that.  i hate to admit, i jumped the wagon about a decade late, but they’re remarkably innovative.  earlier last week, i downloaded the “bosta” soundtrack.  essentially, i’ve been all over the place, finding i’m steadily becoming more intrigued by electronic-based grooves and samples rather than my usual bluesy backbone.  very uncharacteristic…then again, this whole year’s been as such.

so i have nothing more to worry about, right?  let’s hope that – with the expected financial exception – things will be a bit more comfortable and smoother for a little while.  i was going to write a wordy post about losing people close to me, but that doesn’t even matter to me tonite.  i wouldn’t say that i feel “good”, just like the world shifted a little of its weight off one of my shoulders.  and so, i say goodnite…
